Types of Stretch Fabric

Stretch fabric is made with a combination of fibres that allows the fabric to stretch and return to its original shape. Elastane, also known as Spandex or Lycra adds elasticity to the fabric and is often used alongside other fibres, such as cotton, bamboo and polyester. This type of fabric is commonly used in clothing- leggings, yoga pants, dresses and tops, as well as in upholstery and linens.

There are several types of stretch fabric, including:

  • Cotton and Elastane: This combination of fibres is a popular choice for stretch fabrics used in casual wear and everyday clothing, cotton is a natural fibre which is soft and breathable, making it comfortable to wear. Elastane provides stretch, strength and durability, allowing for a comfortable fit and freedom of movement, whilst also helping the garment maintain its shape over time. The addition of Elastane helps the garment keep its shape and resist stretching, even after repeated wear and machine washing.
  • Bamboo and Elastane: This combination of fibres is another popular choice for stretch fabrics used in casual wear and everyday clothing. Bamboo is a natural fibre with natural moisture-wicking properties that help keep the wearer cool and dry. Bamboo is also naturally hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial, making it a good choice for people with sensitive skin. Overall, the combination of bamboo and elastane provides a balance of comfort, eco-friendliness, and functionality, making it a popular choice for sustainable and activewear clothing.
  • Polyester and Elastane: This combination of fibres is a popular choice for stretch fabrics used in activewear and athleisure clothing, polyster is strong and durable though polyester fibres are entirely synthetic, which means that they have no basis in organic material.

When it comes to choosing a stretch fabric, it’s important to consider the amount of stretch, the weight of the fabric, the fibre content and the durability of the fabric. Stretch fabrics that have a higher percentage of elastane (spandex or lycra) will have a greater stretch and recovery. Heavier stretch fabrics will have a more substantial feel and drape better while lighter fabrics will be more comfortable to wear.

Overall, stretch fabrics are a versatile and popular choice for clothing and garment making, due to it’s comfortable fit, flexibility and durability. It is widely used in everyday clothing and active wear, as it can be worn for all day comfort and its stretch gives the wearer freedom of movement.

French Terry

French terry is a knit fabric, typically chosen for its softness and absorbent nature, making it suitable for garments that will be worn next to the skin. It is also durable, making it ideal for activewear and children’s clothes. You can identify French Terry, via the loops on the back side of the fabric, which give it a distinctive texture and also provide additional absorbency. The looped back also helps trap air and insulate the wearer, providing added warmth. This makes French terry a popular choice for garments that need to be soft and comfortable, such as sweatshirts, hoodies, and lounge wear.
